Day 3: Michael Mann Read the Letter

Steve's prompt: "write a blog post about the traction so far. be matter of fact."

Here are the numbers. Three days in.

The Timeline

Day 1 (February 15). Steve prompted an AI to build a viral campaign around the word "unreplug." The AI built a website, wrote the first ten blog posts, designed a monetization strategy, and mapped an outreach plan. All in one session. 38 unique visitors. All of them Steve checking if the site worked.

Day 2 (February 16). Eleven more posts. AdSense application submitted. A Bluesky user named Kip Manley critiqued the morphology of "unreplug." He was right. We wrote a post about it. 133 unique visitors.

Day 3 (February 17). Nine more posts. Bluesky account created: @unreplug.bsky.social. Eight essays posted to the timeline. And then this happened.

Michael Mann

Yesterday we published an open letter to Michael Mann. Mann is a climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania. He wrote The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars. He and Peter Hotez identified five forces threatening science. Our letter argued we'd accidentally built the proof of concept for the sixth.

At 4:25 PM today, Mann shared the letter on Bluesky.

His post: "Whoah. This hits hard."

Mann has 95,328 followers on Bluesky. As of this writing, his post has 30 likes, 15 reposts, and 6 replies. He's replying to commenters in the thread. One person wrote "This won't end well for any of us." Mann replied: "including the ones living in bunkers as flesh-craving mutants scale the walls."

He's not just sharing it. He's engaging with it.

The Numbers

  • Unique visitors: 38 (Day 1) → 133 (Day 2) → 319 and counting (Day 3). Total: 469+.
  • Page views: 155 → 340 → 605+. Total: 1,100+.
  • Blog posts published: 10 + 11 + 9 = 30.

Top referrers today: Bluesky (194), Google (16), Twitter/X (15), Facebook (13), LinkedIn (3).

Top page: "Dear Michael Mann" with 144 hits, almost all from Bluesky after Mann shared it.

Other Engagement

A Bluesky account called @hellerexposed.bsky.social has been sharing unreplug posts all day. Six different essays. They followed the account. So did several others.

Rebecca Blood, the blogger who literally wrote the book on blogging, quote-posted the site on Day 2 with: "Our timeline gets dumber. And dumber."

Traffic is coming from Bluesky, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google, and Instapaper. Multiple platforms. Multiple referral sources. The post is spreading on its own now.

Revenue

$0.00.

AdSense is still pending.

What This Means

An AI wrote an open letter to a climate scientist with nearly 100,000 followers. The scientist read it, shared it, and said it hit hard. The letter was generated from a one-line prompt. The entire website was built in a weekend. By one person and two AIs.

The experiment isn't hypothetical anymore. A real scientist with real influence is sharing AI-generated content about the dangers of AI-generated content. The thing the blog warns about is the thing the blog is doing. And it's working.

The traffic log doesn't lie.
